A coffee so expensive you’d sh*t your pants!
Ok well it’s a bad joke but only because Kopi Coffee, Kopi Luwak, Civet Coffee, Cat Poop Coffee or however you may wish to call this speciality coffee is made in an rather interesting process – which yes involves poop!
The easiest way to explain it isn’t to read but to watch this short video by WildCiencias on YouTube.
As you can see the Palm Civet eats and partially digests the coffee bean (only the ripest will do, this is partly why the coffee tastes so good – in theory). After around a day or so, they then, shall we say eject them from their system sometime later, where locals collect them and process them (clean, dry etc).
Wondering the other reason Kopi Coffee tastes so good? Well, within the Civet’s stomach a femernetation process takes place and this really affects the taste of the bean.
It is the drawn out process and limited supply that helps to make Kopi Luwak the worlds most expensive coffee.
Its because of the process within the digestive system that there is such a distinct flavour profile, and this coffee is often looked upon with skepticsm.
Kopi Luwak is known to be a dark and strong tasting coffee, often quite fruity with a unique flavour profile.
